Kentucky Derby Racing

The Kentucky Derby is the initial race within the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred horse racing, where the Preakness Stakes race follows, and the Belmont Stakes race. The Kentucky Derby Journey is more about the life of horses preparing to race on the First Saturday of May with the Kentucky Derby 101 series. The Kentucky Derby Race, presented by Woodford Reserve, is a top rank, Grade I stakes race for three-year-old Thoroughbred horses. The horse race distance is one and one-quarter miles long, and it takes place on the dirt racetrack at the renowned Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. Colts and even geldings in the race carry 126 pounds, and fillies in the race carry 121 pounds. Twenty horses compete in the Kentucky Derby, which is a broader field size than most horse races, where on average, eight horses race against one another. The twenty horses that run in the Kentucky Derby must first travel along the Road to the Kentucky Derby, a series of thirty-five horse races taking place at tracks across country and world. Points go to the top four horses finishing in each of the 35 horse races, and the twenty horses with most points gain a spot in the starting gate in the Kentucky Derby horse race. The Kentucky Derby-winning purse is $2 million. The Kentucky Derby is on the first Saturday in May every year and usually attracts a crowd of over 155,000 spectators. It is the lengthiest and continuous sports racing event in the Americas, and it is a prestigious horse race, and the best in the world, snd it is often named The Most Exciting Two Minutes of horse racing ever; the Kentucky Derby receives this nickname from the approximate time it takes the eventual winner to run from the starting gate to the finish line. The Kentucky Derby is the first race at the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing, where the Preakness Stakes race follows and the Belmont Stakes race.

Preakness Stakes Racing

The 2024 Triple Crown has a different race order, later dates for all three races, giving horses more time to mature and prepare, significantly more time between each event, and a shortened Belmont, which is nine furlongs instead of the traditional twelve. Last year, the Preakness celebrated Gary Barber’s colt War of Will win only two weeks after being majorly impeded by Maximum Security at the 145th Kentucky Derby. With the current Hall of Fame horse-trainer Mark Casse and jockey Tyler Gaffalione, War of Will ran in three Triple Crown races last year, finishing 7th in the Derby and 9th in the Belmont. He ended the race with a somewhat underwhelming 9th place in the Breeders’ Cup Classic last fall at Santa Anita before jumping from the dirt to the turf or on the grass and focusing on the mile division. In July 2024, he won the Grade One Maker’s Mark Mile at Keeneland. Next up is the exciting racing calendar, the world’s best horses—not just the 3-year-old horses that compete in the Triple Crown—head to Lexington, for the Breeders’ Cup World Championships on Nov. 6th and 7th, with comprehensive coverage from NBC Sports. Although the event runs without spectators, which has become standard for the industry during the current pandemic, the Breeders’ Cup returns to Lexington again in 2022.

Belmont Stakes Racing

The Belmont Stakes is a run over one and a ½ miles and for mature three-year-old thoroughbred horses of both genders. It's frequently contested by the smallest of the three Triple Crown races. The other Triple crown races being the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes, both of which are younger than the Belmont. The Belmont predates the Preakness by six years, the Kentucky Derby by eight. The race runs at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York, just outside the borough of Queens. It is an American Grade One stake race on the first or second Saturday of June. The Belmont Stakes is the fourth oldest horse racing event in North America, having started in 1867. It is the August Belmont, a German-born financier, politician, diplomat, horse breeder, and sportsman who lived in New York. The Jerome Park Racetrack in The Bronx was its original home, and the first-ever race a filly won by the name of Ruthless. The race stayed at that venue until 1890. Then it was changed to nearby Morris Park Racecourse, where it remained until 1904. By 1905, the new 430-acre Belmont Park estate started in Elmont, New York, on Long Island, where the race runs ever since then. From 1926 onwards, the Belmont Stakes champion receives the August Belmont Trophy. On more than one occasion, the race didn't occur due to anti-gambling legislation in New York State.

Triple Crown Racing

The Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing is often shortened to simple The Triple Crown, contains three races for three-year-old Thoroughbred horses. Winning three of these Thoroughbred horse races is the most significant accomplishment in Thoroughbred racing. The term started in mid-19th-century England and nations, where Thoroughbred racing is popular with the Triple Crown series.
